Compost Center at Old City Cemetery
The Compost Education Center at Old City Cemetery
Beginning in February (weather permitting), HCMGA will be staffing the Compost Education Center in The Old City Cemetery on Saturdays to demonstrate and answer composting questions. We’ll be there from 11 a.m. to 12 noon each Saturday as weather permits and other times and days by appointment.
Our aim is to demonstrate how homeowners can create inexpensive, non-smelly, and presentable sites that will corral yard and kitchen wastes and will not offend the neighbors or attract vermin.
This is an opportunity to learn a simple method that cuts waste, harnesses renewable nutrients for the yard and garden, and helps the city and the planet.
The rising cost of potting soil and fertilizer will have more of us recycling to make a superior compost. Half of what ends up in the landfill can be recycled, and we homeowners can save our city money and have nutrient-rich black gold for our landscape and gardens. Our Boy Scout-built composter has three bins: one for “greens,” one for “browns,” and one for “mix.”
A separate bin is available for the finished product: “ready.”
Our center includes a tumbler, as an alternative to the bin system, as well as informative brochures about composting.
If you have not visited Old City Cemetery, you are in for a treat. Not only is it full of history, it is now accredited as a Class II Arboretum, just like Arlington National Cemetery.
